Moffat, Saguache County · Property access

Driveway excavation and grading in Moffat.

Build access around the ground you have and the water that reaches it. A gravel surface needs a supporting foundation and a continuous drainage route.

The starting point

A Moffat driveway estimate should cover the entrance, prepared subgrade, selected aggregate section, compaction and drainage. Adding gravel to a weak or wet road may leave the cause of recurring ruts in place.

Decide whether the road needs repair or rebuilding

Describe what happens after rain or snowmelt. Puddles in wheel tracks, gravel collected at a low point and water crossing the driveway help identify the problem. Check whether water is trapped by a raised shoulder, blocked crossing or missing outlet before deciding how much stone to add.

For new access, mark the destination and leave room to turn and unload. This page concerns Moffat in Saguache County; access and land-use questions should go to the authority responsible for that parcel.

Give runoff a route across and away from the road

The surface needs a deliberate crown or cross-slope suited to the terrain. Where the road drains toward a side swale, the edge must allow water to enter that channel. A raised windrow of gravel can trap water even beside a well-built ditch.

Plan how the channel continues downhill, where a cross-drain is needed and how the outlet will resist erosion. The entrance crossing also needs to preserve the public-road drainage route. Confirm entrance requirements with the road authority.

How the layered driveway system works

  1. Prepare the subgradeRemove unsuitable material, address soft areas, and shape and compact the supporting ground to the planned profile.
  2. Separate soil and stoneUse construction-grade geotextile selected for the soil and loading. Generic garden weed cloth is not automatically a road-separation fabric.
  3. Place the coarse supporting stoneLarge angular ballast forms the lower framework where that road section is appropriate. Select thickness and material for the ground and traffic.
  4. Add compatible intermediate stoneSeat smaller angular stone into the upper openings to support the transition to the wearing course.
  5. Compact graded road baseUse a suitable blend of crushed stone and fines in manageable lifts, maintaining the intended surface drainage shape.
  6. Connect the swale and outletsWhere specified, line the swale with suitable filter fabric and erosion-resistant rock, then connect crossings and protected discharge points.

What changes a Moffat driveway quote?

Planning detailEffect on the work
Length, width and turnaroundControls surface area and aggregate quantities.
Existing ground and roadDetermines removal, subgrade treatment and whether existing material can be reused.
Aggregate sources and truck accessChanges delivered material cost, load handling and hauling time.
Swales, crossings and outletsAdds drainage excavation, rock, fabric, pipe and outlet work as required.
Compaction and finishDefines how material is placed and what the finished road must achieve.

Send dimensions if known, photos along the road and a description of the trouble spots. Material depths, rock sizes and culvert dimensions require a site-specific decision.

Questions before you start

Will the three-layer system prevent every rut?

No road section guarantees that. Ground support, suitable materials, adequate depth, compaction, traffic and maintained drainage all affect performance.

Can we build before winter?

Possibly, when the ground and weather allow suitable placement and compaction. Frozen or saturated subgrade may require a different schedule or treatment.

Do I need a culvert at the entrance?

It depends on the road drainage, runoff and road authority requirements. A site review should establish whether a crossing is needed and where its outlet will discharge.
